Driving Miss Daisy

December 19, 2017 by Anacostia Playhouse

Driving Miss Daisy rolls into the Anacostia Playhouse for the holidays!
It’s the deep south in 1948 and Daisy Werthan has just demolished another car. Over her protestations (“I still have rights!” she says), her son Boolie has hired Hoke Coleburn, a black man, to be her chauffeur. So begins a 25-year relationship that starts with distrust at the dawn of the civil rights era, but through the years grows into a loving interdependence neither could have predicted (or admit to).
Directed by Ella Davis who helmed this past summer’s hit Happy Ending, Daisy promises to be just what you need for the season at the end of a turbulent year. It will leave you with a smile on your face and feeling hopeful about the world.

Mnemonic – Industry Night

April 3, 2017 by Adele Robey

Fiercely relevant to today’s turbulent political climate, Theater Alliance’s production, Mnemonic, uses physically driven storytelling and 21st century technology to reveal a shared humanity in a world that is always moving—by choice or circumstance.

Praised as “a compelling tale for the era of the global village” (Variety), this groundbreaking show—which was created and originally devised by the British theater company Complicite and directed by Simon McBurney—has been updated to reflect American touchstones and world events.

Mnemonic brings to life several interrelated stories. The narrative moves from the journey of a modern woman, Alice in search for her long-lost father in Eastern Europe, to her partner Virgil whom she suddenly left nine months ago, to the discovery of a 5,000 year-old iceman and an investigation into his mysterious fate. These stories will be woven together with vivid movement led by Colin Hovde and Dody DiSanto—director of the Center for Movement Theater and a teaching protégé of Jacques Lecoq himself—alongside expressive visuals from projections designer Patrick W. Lord.

Mnemonic features Scenic Design by Tony Cisek, Lighting Design by William K. D’Eugenio, Sound Design by Matthew M. Nielson, Costume Design by Danielle Preston, and Properties by Alex Vernon.
