American Moor

December 19, 2018 by Anacostia Playhouse

We are so excited to announce the return in January 2019 of American Moor

Written and Performed by Keith Hamilton Cobb

Directed by Kim Weild

What is the role of a lifetime? What is the role of a life?

Playwright/performer, Keith Hamilton Cobb directed by Drama Desk nominee, Kim Weild , uses his love of language and 30 years of experience in the American theatre to explore Shakespeare, race, and America, not necessarily in that order.  His 85-minute award-winning play, American Moor, that considers the dilemma of a seasoned African-American thespian auditioning for a role fraught with racial animus, Othello, is an unapologetic peer into a hindering industry irony that stands as metaphor for our most pressing societal condition: a white culture dictating rules of conduct to a non-white one from an often inadvertent place of privilege.  Cobb, with a facility for poetry entertains, and with the pathos of a veteran tragedian engages while asking questions that demand answers, and answering questions that too seldom get asked.

American Moor  had its first staged reading in March of 2013 under the direction of Brent Buell. It had its first public performance under the direction of Paul Kwame Johnson at Westchester Community College in November of 2013 as a presentation of the WCC Humanities Institute with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Between 2014 and the present it has had multiple presentations contributing to its development. Among the most notable of these were an 11-performance showcase produced by Phoenix Theatre Ensemble at The Wild Project, Manhattan in April of 2015, directed by Paul Kwame Johnson; a production here at The Anacostia Playhouse in July of 2015, directed by Craig Wallace; and a joint production of O.W.I. (Bureau of Theatre) and Phoenix Theatre Ensemble at Boston Center for the Arts in July of 2017, directed by Kim Weild. The 2015 Phoenix Theatre Ensemble showcase garnered an AUDELCO Award for Outstanding Solo Performance. The Anacostia Playhouse production brought the play to the attention of The Folger Shakespeare Library, the script now a part of the library’s permanent collection. The O.W.I./Phoenix production in Boston earned two IRNE (Independent Reviewers of New England) Awards for Best Visiting Production Small Theatre, and Best Visiting Performer Small Theatre, and an Elliot Norton Award (Boston Theater Critics Association) for Outstanding Solo Performance.  Most recently  American Moor was presented on the stage of The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London, England.

If you missed it in 2015, do not miss it this time.

PWYC previews are January 9 and 10.

Post-show discussion will be Thursday January 17, January 24, and January 31.

Visions/Revisions: Anacostia Playhouse New Works Festival

January 25, 2018 by Anacostia Playhouse

Anacostia Playhouse New Works Festival

Anacostia Playhouse is pleased to announce the winners of our first-ever new play festival, Visions/Revisions! Eight new and non-produced 10-minute plays have been selected and will be presented as staged readings with professional actors and directors.

These plays address the themes of deterioration and renovation, both physically and socially, over the course of Anacostia’s long history. Anacostia has undergone many physical and social changes from the time of the Nacochtank Native American settlement along the Anacostia River, to the founding of Union Town, to today. These submissions examine the impact of revisionist history on Anacostia and its residents.

This New Works Festival will be held November 15–17 at the Anacostia Playhouse located in historic Anacostia in Washington DC. The festival is an opportunity to introduce new playwrights to Washington’s theater community and establish relationships between writers, producers and directors.

Driving Miss Daisy rolls into the Anacostia Playhouse for the holidays!
It’s the deep south in 1948 and Daisy Werthan has just demolished another car. Mnemonic – Industry Night

April 3, 2017 by Adele Robey

Fiercely relevant to today’s turbulent political climate, Theater Alliance’s production, Mnemonic, uses physically driven storytelling and 21st century technology to reveal a shared humanity in a world that is always moving—by choice or circumstance.

Praised as “a compelling tale for the era of the global village” (Variety), this groundbreaking show—which was created and originally devised by the British theater company Complicite and directed by Simon McBurney—has been updated to reflect American touchstones and world events.

Mnemonic brings to life several interrelated stories. The narrative moves from the journey of a modern woman, Alice in search for her long-lost father in Eastern Europe, to her partner Virgil whom she suddenly left nine months ago, to the discovery of a 5,000 year-old iceman and an investigation into his mysterious fate. These stories will be woven together with vivid movement led by Colin Hovde and Dody DiSanto—director of the Center for Movement Theater and a teaching protégé of Jacques Lecoq himself—alongside expressive visuals from projections designer Patrick W. Lord.

Mnemonic features Scenic Design by Tony Cisek, Lighting Design by William K. D’Eugenio, Sound Design by Matthew M. Nielson, Costume Design by Danielle Preston, and Properties by Alex Vernon.
