After many delays and countless hurdles, the dream of the Anacostia Playhouse became reality in late summer 2013. Since then we have welcomed performers, designers, directors, theatergoers and community members from all over the metro area. And there are lots of great events, theater, music and more on the books in the months to come.
Our Vision
We have set a goal of providing performance space to new and emerging artists and theater companies at below-market rates, with a special focus on those who are based east of the Anacostia River. We also sponsor and produce theatrical works, concerts and dance performances ourselves. The Anacostia Playhouse is a fully flexible black box theater space that seats up to 150. We also have a separate multi-use space that can be used for rehearsals, small meetings, after school programs and more, and the lobby that features exhibition space for local artists. As we go forward, we hope to implement a training program that will provide area youth with access to technical and artistic training and professional opportunities to hone those skills in the field, working alongside professional directors, designers and technicians.
Where We Are
The Anacostia Playhouse is located in a historically rich area of the District that has been underserved by existing cultural institutions. We know that the arts are an economic engine for communities, contributing to vibrant street life and fostering responsible community development. While the neighborhoods East of the River have often been seen as separate from other areas of the District, the local span of the 11th Street Bridge directly connects the historic districts of Capitol Hill and Anacostia, making the Playhouse truly accessible.
Play A Starring Role
Keeping the Anacostia Playhouse alive and well and focused on reaching our goals (while also paying off construction costs) requires funding above and beyond what we can take in on tickets or rent. Won’t you help insure the future of this important facility? Although it took the IRS a good long time, we officially have our IRS tax exempt status so every dollar you give is 100% tax deductible. Please send contributions to Anacostia Playhouse, 2020 Shannon Place, SE, Washington, DC 20020, or click on the donate button to give online. If you are interested in naming opportunities or giving appreciated securities, please contact us directly for more information.
We are grateful for your generosity. It is your support that will help the Anacostia Playhouse reach its goals and become a central hub for the arts East of the River.
